We're all just out here trying our best, ya know?
And I'll need your favorite snack sub boxes, please and thank you!
This week’s Q&A has me thinking quite a bit about the changing landscape of online writing, turnover of editors, and how the Google God’s can’t make up their darned mind.
How many of you feel like if you can’t do it perfectly, you might as well not do it. Or that anything that’s not A++ work is garbage. Or maybe when you hit send on an assignment or a pitch, your mind immediately goes “oohhhhmygawdddd that was horrible, awful, what was I thinking?”
Just me? I doubt it.
Q&A Korner
You asked: “How do you handle writing guidelines that keep changing? I've been writing for a certain website for 6+ months. Every time a new assignment comes in, the citation or writing style changes.”
My Thoughts: You can only do the best you can. It’s easy to get caught up in submitting everything perfectly, worrying that your client will drop you if you don’t check everything off their style guide.
And yes, it’s good to stick to the style guide as best as you can. And, it’s helpful to send your work in with minimal errors if you can. You want your editors to feel like their job is easier because you do amazing work.
But.. you’re only one person. And unless this is the only client you’re writing for— it’s not possible (or worth it, in my honest opinion) to triple-check every single element of your article..unless it’s a cornerstone client and this is what they’ve said they expect of you.
So.. do your best.
I typically write my assignment, then pull up the most recent style guide, do a little F-search for words they don’t like, and double-check how they want their citations done. Write first, edit later.
To keep things streamlined, I created a template in Notion to link each client to my assignments for the week.
