Newly Published Pieces and The First Soundbite Spotlight
Prime Day can wait.. you'll want to read this
My Prime Day shopping is almost over (as my bank account sighs of relief), and I’m more than excited about what I scored— an Oura ring, Ninja Creami, upholstery cleaner, new AirPods to replace my current dying pair, several birthday and Christmas gifts for the kids, and back to school gear—- all stuff I’ve been eyeing that’s finally on sale. What’s been your favorite deal so far?
Soundbite Spotlight
If you’re responding to media requests, but not getting your quotes picked up, it may not be that the content you’re sharing isn’t good. Most likely it’s HOW you’re sharing it.
Learning how to write in soudbites makes it easy for a journalist to use your quotes. And speaking on behalf of all journalists—we’re not using responses that make our jobs harder.
I’m sharing real life examples of responses I’ve gotten and either explaining why it works as a soundbite or offering tips on how to improve it so you can start getting more media mentions and creating valuable connections with journalists and the media!
Here is a response I received for an interview on the best plant based protein powders.
The Interview question: What are 2-3 vegan protein powders you recommend? What makes these choices better than the rest?
“Two NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Choice protein powders I frequently recommend are Garden of Life Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder in Chocolate or Vanilla and Vega Sport Premium - Plant-Based Protein Powder in Vanilla, Chocolate, Mocha, Berry, or Peanut Butter. Taste is a highly personal preference and both these brands offer numerous options that taste fine on their own mixed in water, mixed with a non-dairy milk, or mixed into oatmeal, smoothies, and recipes.”
The problem: This person knows their stuff and provided great recommendations. But by combining both products, I can’t use quotes about either one.
How I would change it:
“Garden of Life Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder is NSF-Certified for Sport and Informed Choice Trusted by Sport, which makes it easy to recommend to the athletes I work with.”
“Vega Sport Premium Plant-Based Protein Powder is NSF-Certified for Sport, has 30 grams of protein and comes in four flavors, making it easy to add to water or even mix into oatmeal, smoothies, or other recipes to increase protein intake.”
By seperating the products into two complete ideas, and providing different information on each, a journalist can easily grab your direct quote and elaborate on your statement to really drive your recommendation home to the reader.
