This week we shared a request for a quote by a RD. A journalist was looking for RD to comment on a summer beverages story. One RD responded that she wouldn't do so unless she was paid. We found this respond odd/clueless. What would you say to this RD?
That that's not how that works, lol! I can see how maybe there was a misunderstanding, since experts CAN be paid for media interviews, but that payment is never by the journalist or the editorial outlet (as far as I'm aware).
Journalists seek quotes from experts in exchange for that expert getting massive visibility and increased authority (and backlink juice if they have a website).
If the RD wants to be paid for media mentions, they need to strike up a deal with a brand that will pay them for mentioning their products in the media.
Agree...not sure why this particular RD was so adamant (and belligerent) about expecting payment for a quote...unless she lacked experience or had had some bad experience
