Yesterday, I saved $600, and all it took was 15 minutes in front of my computer. You can do it, too, for the low rate of $599. I'm just kidding, of course. I’ll give this away for free.
It started with a heart-to-heart with my remaining student loans, and we decided that a few things had to change (no relation to the recent Prime Day blackout shopping spree, of course).
The rate at which I see unexpected charges on my bank account from a plug-in I signed up for and never used, or a VIP membership to some site I bought something off of one time prompted my first money-saving move.
I made a table in Notion with all my subscriptions, looked at my PayPal recurring subs and Apple subs, searched “subscription” in my email, etc., and realized I could save $600 a year by canceling the ones I *NEVER* use. I’ll let myself really think about the rest of them to see if they’re worth the cost, but I won’t even know if I’m not getting the ones I canceled, because I never used them.
While some subscriptions are essential for me (Grammarly, hosting, editing software, a few key website plugins, Keysearch, Hello Bonsai, etc), others I used for a couple of months 3 years ago and keep forgetting to cancel.
This is not a newsletter about saving money, but if you run a business and have any sort of digital life, you’re probably in the same boat. If you do this, send me a note and tell me how much you saved—I’m just genuinely interested in knowing I’m not alone here.
Soundbite Spotlight
If you’re responding to media requests, but not getting your quotes picked up, it may not be that the content you’re sharing isn’t good. Most likely it’s HOW you’re sharing it.
Learning how to write in soudbites makes it easy for a journalist to use your quotes. And speaking on behalf of all journalists—we’re not using responses that make our jobs harder.
I’m sharing real life examples of responses I’ve gotten and either explaining why it works as a soundbite or offering tips on how to improve it so you can start getting more media mentions and creating valuable connections with journalists and the media!
Here is a response I received for an interview on supplements men over 50 should be taking.
The Interview question: What is a supplement you would recommend for men over 50?
The Response: “With the risk for cardiovascular disease increasing with age, steps to reduce inflammation are key! Omega-3 fatty acids are incredible inflammatory-fighting nutrients that may reduce cardiovascular disease risk.”
What I love: This expert added the links to studies that back up what they’re claiming. This saves me (and other journalists) so much time and energy since we have to back up the facts, stats, and claims we’re quoting. Yes, you’re an expert and there’s a lot of value in that. But if you’re making a claim, we really need to be sourcing that.
Sometimes, I get responses where the expert adds the entire citation at the bottom of the email. I don’t want that. It takes too much work. I want to click on a link to see the study, make sure it works (it isn’t 50 years old), and maybe even get some other goodies out of it that I can use for the story.
TLDR: When you make a claim or use a stat in an interview, add the source link.
