High protein chips, brain nutrition experts, and snacks on snacks (and how much should you really be pitching as a freelancer?)
New Month (almost), THREE new media requests!
Two weeks with no new assignments, and I’ve added EIGHT articles to my schedule within 2 days.. the life of a freelancer.
Q&A Korner
You asked: “As a freelance writer for a few years now, have you settled into a good rhythm or do you feel constantly stressed about finding/pitching new clients?”
My Thoughts: Yes and No. Most months, I have (almost) as much work as I can handle, but there’s the odd month here or there when things slow down, and I start getting worried. I’m pretty sure this is normal among all freelancers, even those who are pretty established.
There is always an outlet that is over budget and can’t give any more work, a client who decides to ghost you, or projects that end. So, continually pitching and networking is essential. Even when you’re busy and have more than enough work, you need to be pitching.
This is a TOTAL do as I say and not as I do since it’s been over a month since I’ve sent any pitches or LOIs out. However, let my mistakes be a lesson for you (and me). July was my slowest month of the year and it’s most likely because I slacked on pitching and networking in Q2 (because I was swamped with work). Because of this, I have big blocks of time cut out in my schedule for the next couple of weeks to pitch and network.
When I look at my clients this time last year, I only have three of the same clients. In January, I wrote for three clients I no longer write for (one closed their nutrition section, one ran out of freelancing budget, and the other is still hanging around but only giving out a couple of assignments a quarter instead of several every month). But I have had five new clients since then. To keep clients coming in as ones inevitably go out, you need to keep networking and pitching.

If your brand works with freelancers to create content (SEO or promotional) for their website or social media, send me a note! I’ve worked with several brands on content, recipes, and social campaigns and would love to chat!
